Ranks and Recruitment Process of the Indian Army!

Indian Army Selection process 2021:Indian army is the fourth-largest standing army in the world. Difficult times like wars, and any other situation that first comes to mind is the Indian Army. It stands, fights against evil, and keeps the country peaceful. The Indian army has 1,362,500 active troops along with the 2,100,000 reserve troops. Let’s discuss the ranks of the Indian army.

Commissioned officers -Field Marshals:

  • Field marshals can be recognized with a national emblem badge, crossed baton surrounded by a lotus blossom wreath.
  • Field Marshal is the highest rank of the Indian Army. This is a wartime rank and there are only two officers who reached this rank.
  • They are Field Marshal KM Cariappa and Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw.

Rank – General:

  • General’s badge looks like the national emblem on it, followed by a five-point star over a crossed baton and saber. 
  • other than the field marshal rank, Rank General is also the highest rank. Only one chief of army staff (COAS) can hold this rank.
  • Present, the only officer general Bipin Ravath is holding this rank.
  • They can retire from their position after three years of service or at the age of 62 years.

Rank – Lieutenant General:

  • Lieutenant General rank holders wear a badge with a national emblem on it over a crossed baton and saber similar to Rank – General. 
  • The only difference is there is no five-point star on the badge. 
  • After 36 years of service as commissioners, they can be appointed as Lieutenant General based on their performance. 
  • Or, they may hold a position of army commanders or vice chief of army staff. The retirement age for this rank is 62 years. 

Rank – Major General

  • Their badge seems like having a five-pointed star over a crossed baton and a saber.
  • Army officers get to this rank by getting promotions through selection.
  • For this, they need to provide 32 years of Commissioned service.
  • The retirement age for this rank is 58 years.

Rank – Brigadier

  • Rank Brigadier officers wear a badge with a national emblem. Below the national emblem, there are three five-pointed stars arranged in a triangular formation.
  • To get this rank, one must need to provide 25 years of commissioned services. And need to get to this position by promotion.
  • The retirement age for this rank is 56 years.

Rank – Colonel

  • Similar to Brigadier rank, Rank- Colonel officers have a badge with a national emblem over 2 five-pointed stars.
  • After 15 years of commissioned services, one can this position through promotion or get to this position after 26 years of commissioned service. 
  • The retirement age for this rank is 54.

Rank – Lieutenant Colonel

  • Lieutenant Colonel officers wear a badge with a national emblem along with a five-pointed star.
  • After finishing 13 years of commissioned service one can get to this position.

Rank – Major:

  • They will wear a badge that has a national emblem on it.
  • After the completion of 6 years of commissioned service, one can get into this position.

Rank – Captain:

  • They will wear a badge that has 3 five-pointed stars.
  • After the completion of 2 years of commissioned service, one can get into this position.

Rank – Lieutenant:

  • They will wear a badge that has 2 five-pointed stars.
  • After achieving rank on commissioning they will enter into the Indian army as an officer.

Rank – Subedar Major (Infantry) or Risaldar Major (Cavalry and Armoured Regiments):

  • They wear a badge with a gold national emblem along with a stripe.
  • This post will get through the promotion by selection.
  • The retirement will be after 34 years of service or at the age of 54.

Rank – Subedar (Infantry) or Risaldar (Cavalry and Armoured Regiments):

  • They wear a badge with 2 gold stars along with a stripe.
  • This post will get through the promotion by selection.
  • The retirement will be after 30 years of service or at the age of 52.

Rank – Naib Subedar (Infantry) or Naib Risaldar (Cavalry and Armoured Regiments):

  • They wear a badge with 1 gold star along with a stripe.
  • This post will get through the promotion by selection.
  • The retirement will be after 28 years of service or at the age of 54.

Rank – Havildar (Infantry) or Daffadar (Cavalry and Armoured Regiments):

  • They wear a badge with 3 rank chevrons.
  • This post will get through the promotion by selection.
  • The retirement will be after 26 years of service or at the age of 49.

Rank – Naik (Infantry) or Lance Daffadar (Cavalry and Armoured Regiments):

  • They wear a badge with 2 rank chevrons.
  • This post will get through the promotion by selection.
  • The retirement will be after 24 years of service or at the age of 49.

Rank – Lance Naik (Infantry) or Acting Lance Daffadar (Cavalry and Armoured Regiments):

  • They wear a badge with a single rank chevron.
  • This post will get through the promotion by selection.
  • The retirement will be after 22 years of service or at the age of 48.

Rank – Sepoy:

  • They wear a badge with a plain shoulder badge.
  • They are identified as sepoys themselves according to the corps they are working for. If they are from signals they are identified as a signalman.

Indian Army Selection process 2021: Educational Qualification Required to apply for Indian Army:

Candidates must be qualified in SSLC or Matric with 45 % marks and 33 % in every subject.

Applicants Age should be – 17 1/2 to 21 years

Marital status – Preferably Unmarried Male

Physical Standards – These standards may vary according to the region of the candidate.

  • Minimum height – 167 cm
  • Weight – not less than 50 kg
  • Chest – must be 77 cm and expansion a minimum of 5 cm
  • However, there are some relaxations in the case of applicants who are from the western Himalayan region like Garhwal, Kumaon, Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Assam, and also southern states like TN, goa, Karnataka.
  • Apart from these qualifications, sons of servicemen, War Widows, Outstanding sportsmen (who have represented the school in the state, district, college, university, board championship and earned 1 st and second positions.), sons of Ex-Servicemen, 
  • Also, the candidate must be healthy without any communicable diseases, cardiovascular problems, eye or ear impairment.
  • Candidates need to apply through an application form. Selected candidates will be asked to attend a physical fitness exam. After shortlisting from this test, they will be sent to a medical examination. 
  • After qualifying in the medical examination then they will be eligible for a written test. The written test includes the questions from General Knowledge, Computer awareness, Maths.) 

Indian Army Selection process 2021: Officers Selection Process:

The selection process includes an entrance test followed by a 5-day services selection board interview. This interview also includes physical tests and medical tests. Candidates can apply for any of the tests mentioned below.Indian Army Selection process 2021

National Defence Academy (Pune):

Candidates need to apply UPSC exam and later they will be asked to attend a 5-day services selection board interview. Candidates must pass class XI to attempt this exam. After this, the interview includes both physical and medical tests. The candidates who have qualified through the interview will be able to serve in the Indian Army or Navy. Those candidates will be sent to the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun for one year before the start of the commissioning service.

Combined Defence Service Examination (CDSE):

Candidates who are pursuing the final year of graduation or who have finished graduation can apply for this exam. Candidates who have qualified SSB interview and medical tests are eligible to enter the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun and they will be trained for 18 months before starting their services.

University Entry Scheme (UES):

Candidates who are in the final year of Engineering can apply for this exam and the shortlisted candidates will get the training at IMA for one year. After completion of the course, they will be granted one year for increments and promotions.

Technical Graduate Course :

 This course is also similar to UES. Candidates who are in the final year of BE or BTech can apply through this. Shortlisted candidates will get the training at IMA.

AEC (Men)

The applicants who have qualified in master’s degree (MA/M.Sc/M.Com/MCA/MBA) with first or second-grade marks. Shortlisted candidates will get 12 months of training at IMA. 

Officers Training Academy, Gaya:

Candidates who are qualified in 10+2 classes (physics and chemistry, mathematics) can apply for this academy. However, this exam will have cut-off marks as per the notification. After qualifying in SSB interview and medical tests candidates will be sent to Officers Training academy to teach basic military and technical training.

Short Service Commission:

And last, the Indian army is also offering a Short Service commission for both men and women. This service lasts for 10 or 14 years as per the candidate’s requirement.
